Field orientation

Know the route. Read the terrain.

From Northern Tier’s Atikokan base, crews travel into Quetico and the Crown Lands on customized wilderness canoe expeditions. Days are shaped by interconnected lakes, moving water, portages, weather, and the shared work of navigating and sustaining a crew far from roads.

BEFORE YOU GO

Routes and permits are crew-specific. Use Northern Tier’s maps, interpreter guidance, and current advisor planning materials rather than a generic recreation-app route.

Verify current conditions

Closures, permits, weather, water, access, and regulations can change. Use the official land-manager source before every trip.

Lesson from the terrain

Shared burdens build shared leadership.

Portages, navigation, weather, and camp life make interdependence visible. A capable crew does not wait for one person to carry every hard decision.
