Field orientation

Know the route. Read the terrain.

The trail follows Oh Be Joyful Creek from near Crested Butte into a broad glacial valley of waterfalls, wildflowers, and steep mountain walls. Hikers can choose a shorter valley outing or continue toward Blue Lake and Daisy Pass for a more demanding high-country day or overnight trip.

BEFORE YOU GO

The Slate River crossing near the start can be hazardous during runoff. Afternoon storms are common in summer.

Verify current conditions

Closures, permits, weather, water, access, and regulations can change. Use the official land-manager source before every trip.

Lesson from the terrain

A crossing is a decision gate.

The first major obstacle is not merely something to get through. It is a place to reassess runoff, weather, capability, and the wisdom of continuing.
