Field orientation

Know the route. Read the terrain.

Reaching Spade Lake requires a long approach past Waptus Lake followed by a steep climb through old-growth forest, meadows, talus, and narrow tread. The reward is a remote, cliff-ringed alpine lake deep in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, best approached as a multi-day backpack.

BEFORE YOU GO

As of August 2026, the approach is closed because of the Three Queens Fire. Verify current Forest Service and Washington Trails Association notices before travel.

Verify current conditions

Closures, permits, weather, water, access, and regulations can change. Use the official land-manager source before every trip.

Lesson from the terrain

The approach is part of the objective.

A remote lake may be the destination, but the long approach, steep tread, fire conditions, and exit options determine whether the trip is viable.
